Waltham Forest – variety and opportunity

Waltham Forest lies along the eastern banks of the River Lea, between Chingford in the north and Leyton in the South. The principal centres are Chingford, Whipps Cross and Walthamstow. This is an area which is often overlooked, but one that is also rich in history; there are references in Doomsday book and there are Saxon and Roman remains as well. It is also one of the greenest areas of London north of the Thames; there are numerous parks and open spaces, including the southern reaches of Epping Forest.

A positive and supportive Planning environment.

We have found that planning officers are very responsive and reasonably lenient on certain aspects of design. This reflects a validation requirement to provide contextual information (such as the relationship between the application site to neighbouring buildings) for better assessment.

The borough is keen to be as transparent and helpful as possible, while still keeping to clear Planning guidelines. In fact, due to excellent Supplementary Planning Guidance on Shopfront design, we find ourselves implementing their guidelines in other projects outside the borough.

While the duty planning service (a free planning advice service) ended in 2020, planning officers are generally responsive to calls and emails. Alternatively, if tailored and formal advice is required, Waltham Forest Planning provides pre-application advice available at different price points depending on the type and size of the development.
