Hammersmith & Fulham – the central London ‘suburb’ with something for everyone
Filling in the bend in the river between Hammersmith and Chelsea, Fulham is a sought-after district with plentiful shops and restaurants and two major football stadia at Craven Cottage (Fulham FC) and Stamford Bridge (Chelsea FC). To the south the borough is bounded by the river, on the other side of which are Putney and Battersea. To the north are Earl’s Court and South Kensington. Fulham is part of the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham.

London, revived
In the 18th and 19th centuries Fulham was an area of considerable poverty. It saw rapid re-development in the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, only to fall out of fashion in the mid 20th century. Since the 1980s, however, the area has become extremely popular; pleasantly residential in feel and yet just an easy journey to central London. The majority of housing stock is Victorian or Edwardian, and Planning policies retain a clear focus on maintaining those visual characteristics – something we appreciate as architectural designers in Hammersmith & Fulham.
Planning policies are cautious
Most of the housing stock in Hammersmith & Fulham is in Victorian or Edwardian terraces. There is a conscious planning approach to preserve the external appearance of these residential streets, so it worth remembering this when preparing loft conversions, extensions and refurbishment generally – and with the relatively small number of new-builds in the area. Details in the finish and retaining the period character have become a priority for Planners, and thus for property owners too.

Our Latest Projects.
For the past decade or so it has often been said that it is becoming harder to move home: housing remains expensive and continue getting more costly in popular areas. The process of moving is expensive too, and often stressful. We, on the other hand, have a solution and go by the phrase of, “Don’t move, improve!”.
Combining traditional features with a modern approach
Such policies present interesting design challenges – which we love – as much of our work in the area has included clients who aim to put their unique stamp on a property and yet maintain the traditional appearance of the property. We’ve been able to create imaginative solutions, maximising light and space without loss of the intrinsic character of the house.
We are proud of our track record as architectural designers in Hammersmith & Fulham and nearby, and we’d be delighted to talk with you about what you have in mind, whether that’s a loft conversion, house extension, or any other project.
