1. A Dream Master Bedroom and Ensuite

A classic way to transform a loft conversion is by creating your dream master bedroom complete with ensuite. If you dedicate your whole loft space to creating your bedroom, you can put in all the features that you’ve always dreamed of, just the way you want them.

Want a walk-in shower? Built-in storage? A large bedroom? With a loft conversion, all of this can be provided for, and you can design your new bedroom to look and function exactly how you’d like.

You can consider a few twists on the basic idea – you might opt for an open plan bedroom, recreating the aesthetic of a boutique hotel in your very own home.

2. A Children’s Bedroom and Playroom

If you’ve got kids or grandchildren, you can maximise the space for them by simply transforming your loft conversion space into a children’s bedroom and playroom.

If your family is growing, utilising this extra square footage is a great way to ensure that  everyone has their own space at home, and you won’t feel like you’re living on top of each other. You can even consider adding a bathroom, if space allows, creating distinctive new self-contained accommodation.

Alcoves in loft conversions are a great way to store toys and children’s books and even a great place to create secret dens!

3. A Spacious Home Office

If you’ve started working at home since Covid-19 and have no intentions of returning to the office, it could be time to reconsider your workspace. We all dream of working in a quiet office, away from distractions but for many of us it’s not possible. Too often there’s a blaring TV or children running around the house.

A home office in a loft conversion could give you the space that you need to work in peace, freeing up extra space in the rest of the home too.

4. Consider Adding a Balcony or Terrace

For many homeowners, an outdoor space is an absolute must. And there’s no need to deny yourself fresh air just because a loft conversion takes place in an attic

Even with a pitched roof you can easily create a balcony. One ingenious method is to use Cabrio type roof window. Here the roof window is split in two. The upper portion opens upwards to above head height and the lower section opens out to create the front of the balcony. As it does so, side railings automatically extend from within the window frame.

There is also a similar design used to give access from a pitched roof to a flat roof area – a new terraced area set into the roofing itself.

Don’t have room for a balcony or terrace? You can still use French windows or bi-fold doors to get the feeling of being out in the fresh air. Consider using a Juliet balcony or glass balustrade for a robust but pretty look that leads to the outside.

5. Transforming Your Loft Conversion’s Staircase

We think the gateway to your new loft space should be considered as an important design choice, so it’s important to remember it at the planning stage. Always consider the details of your new staircase when thinking about how best to fully integrate the loft conversion into the house.

Previously, many loft conversions, had a staircase that was dark, cramped and uninviting. You can avoid this and transform the space into a lighter and brighter stairwell. We would recommend painting the stairs and the walls by the stairway a bright white and adding spotlights along the stairs. You may even be able to include a roof window to let in more natural light.

You can also create more light by fitting a glass balustrade. This will not only create a fantastic illusion of space, but it will also add light in the darkest corners of the stairs.

6. Choose a Multi-Purpose Room

If have multiple needs but can’t decide how to best use the new space, consider transforming your loft conversion into a multi-purpose room.

A multi-purpose room is a great option if you have frequently visiting guests. You’ll want to offer them a place to sleep but you may not need an extra bedroom all the time. You could use the multi-purpose room as a study, guest bedroom and living space all-in-one – some loft conversions are even ideal as a home cinema.
